Field Day
ESSEX FELLS - The West Essex Amateur Radio Club (WEARC) participated in
an annual emergency communications Field Day sponsored by the American
Radio Relay League, the national association for amateur radio. The
event started at 2 p.m. Saturday June 28 and ended 2 p.m. Sunday June
29. Eleven WEARC members set up a temporary communications station at
the Essex Fells Service Building and contacted hams across North America
as an exercise in disaster preparedness. They made 781 contacts with
other participating stations in 46 states and 5 Canadian provinces.
Approximately 50,000 hams participate in this event nationwide. Visitors
included Mayor Ed Abbot of Essex Fells and Mayor Ken McKenna from
Verona.
Amateur “Ham” Radio Operators are frequently first responders when a
major disaster strikes, providing critical communications to local
authorities after normal communications have been rendered inoperative.
During Hurricane Katrina, Ham Radio was the sole source of communication
for many communities within the disaster area, linking local
authorities, hospitals, shelters, and relief organizations, with State
and Federal authorities. Hams continue to provide crucial and sometimes
life-saving communications during disasters.
